WJEC Level 1/2 Vocational Award in Sport and Coaching Principles (Technical Award)
Studying the WJEC Level 1/2 Vocational Award in Sport and Coaching Principles offers students a practical, engaging and career-focused insight into the world of sport, fitness and coaching. The course combines classroom learning with hands-on practical activities, allowing students to develop both academic understanding and real-world skills that are transferable across education, employment and everyday life.
Developing Functional Skills for Further Learning
Throughout the course, students develop key functional skills that support progression into further education, training or employment. Learners strengthen their communication skills through coaching sessions, leadership tasks, group discussions and written evaluations. Numeracy skills are developed through analysing performance data, measuring fitness levels, understanding training principles and interpreting results. Students also build literacy and digital skills by completing written assignments, researching sporting roles, and presenting ideas clearly and professionally. Organisation, time management and independent learning are embedded as students plan sessions, meet deadlines and reflect on their own performance and progress.
Broadening Curiosity, Strengths and Resilience
The course provides a wide range of opportunities to challenge students and encourage them to push beyond their comfort zones. Learners take part in practical leadership and coaching activities, where they are required to plan, deliver and adapt sessions for others. This builds confidence, resilience and problem-solving skills. Students are encouraged to analyse performance, explore different roles within the sports industry, and understand how theory links to practice. The variety of sporting contexts and tasks helps students discover their strengths, develop a growth mindset and build a genuine curiosity about how sport, health and performance work together.
Empowering Healthy, Safe and Productive Futures
In lessons, students gain essential knowledge about health, safety, wellbeing and ethical behaviour in sport and physical activity. They learn about injury prevention, risk assessment, rules and regulations, and how to create safe and inclusive environments. These skills extend far beyond the classroom, supporting students to make informed choices about their own physical and mental health. Leadership, teamwork, respect and responsibility are central to the course, helping students become confident, active and positive members of society who understand the importance of healthy lifestyles and community involvement.
This vocational qualification supports students in becoming motivated learners, effective communicators and responsible citizens, while opening pathways into further study, apprenticeships and careers within sport, fitness and related industries.

Developing Students’ Functional Skills to Successfully Access Further Learning
In Sport, Fitness and Active Leisure we develop functional skills to access further learning by:
Maths: We embed maths skills into sport and fitness activities in a practical and meaningful way, linked directly to real-life scenarios. This helps students see the purpose of maths and confidently apply it in everyday situations. Tasks include calculating heart rate zones and BMI, understanding ratios for nutrition and hydration, budgeting for sports events and equipment, and managing time for training schedules. These activities gradually build students’ numeracy skills at a pace that feels achievable. By integrating maths into fitness and leisure tasks, learners recognise how it is used in daily life and in the industry.
English: Students are encouraged to communicate effectively through discussions, presentations, and written reflections, building confidence in reading, writing, and speaking. Lessons are tailored to create a low-pressure environment where tasks are broken down to meet individual needs. Reading skills are developed through interpreting fitness plans and health guidelines, while writing tasks include reports on training progress and event planning. Technical vocabulary such as “cardiovascular endurance” and “flexibility” is introduced and reinforced. These skills enable students to thrive in everyday life, further education, and
careers in sport and fitness, while supporting their ability to plan, explain, and reflect on their ideas.
Providing a Wide Range of Opportunities to Broaden Students’ Curiosity, Strengths and Resilience
We provide students with varied hands-on opportunities inside and outside the classroom that encourage curiosity, confidence, and resilience through a combination of practical activities and career-focused learning. Students are supported to discover their existing strengths, recognise areas for growth, and challenge themselves.
Throughout this course, learners explore the wide scope of careers in sport, fitness, and active leisure—from local opportunities to global roles. They take part in activities such as planning and running sports events, visiting gyms and leisure centres, and engaging with industry professionals. These experiences help students develop independence, resilience, and problem-solving skills while learning that progress comes through practice and perseverance.
Off-site visits and guest speaker sessions broaden horizons and introduce new skill sets. Students are regularly encouraged to step outside their comfort zone and embrace these experiences, helping them adapt, learn, and succeed in diverse environments.
Empowering Students with the Knowledge and Skills to Lead Productive, Healthy and Safe Futures
Sport, Fitness and Active Leisure helps students develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence to thrive both in and beyond the classroom. Through practical projects and fitness activities, students learn teamwork, leadership, and communication while promoting healthy lifestyles and wellbeing.

Alongside practical skills, students explore societal issues such as obesity, mental health, and inclusivity in sports. This combination of personal development and career awareness equips learners to make informed choices about their future and contribute positively to society.
